The Coldwater Hill Rest Area is ten miles apart from the Massacre Rocks Rest Area on the Snake River Plain. The common goal of the two sites was to relate to the natural materials, and/or to make a historical connection to the Oregon Trail.
The design draws inspiration from the Greek Revival architecture, which the earliest Oregon Trail pioneers built at their eventual destinations.
